When evaluating the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists (from EWG-Environmental Working Group) it’s clear that certain fruits and vegetables are more prone to absorbing pesticides. For example, strawberries, spinach, and nectarines consistently rank among the top three in the Dirty Dozen. These items tend to absorb large amounts of pesticide residues due to their thin skins or porous surfaces, making it difficult to completely wash them clean. On the other hand, avocados, sweet corn, and pineapples are frequently listed among the Clean 15. These fruits and vegetables tend to have thicker skins or outer layers that act as a barrier, reducing pesticide absorption and making them safer choices when buying conventionally grown produce.

The importance of eating organic produce to avoid harmful pesticide effects cannot be overstated. Pesticides used in conventional farming can pose health risks, particularly when exposure occurs over time. Studies have linked pesticides to various health concerns, including hormonal disruption, neurological damage, and even certain cancers.
